Roger Federer will come hard at Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon semis – Tennis News
Stage is set for yet another epic battle between the two of the best players in the tennis world, the top ranked Novak Djokovic and the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer. The world number three will be aiming to hunt down the Serbian
juggernaut in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championships on Friday afternoon.
With the second seed Spaniard, Rafael Nadal, out of the tournament draw, either one of the two (Djokovic and Federer) is anticipated to become the champion at the All England Club this season. The six-time Wimbledon champion, Federer,
is rated as the hot favourite for lifting his record-equalling seventh crown at the grass court Grand Slam event but he has to go through the ‘Man of Steel’, Djokovic, in the round of four.
Although the Swiss legend still leads 14-12 against the Serbian in the head-to-head series, Djokovic’s recent rise to the world number one spot has been very terrifying for all of the other contestants. He is on a three-match winning
streak against Federer and has recently defeated him in the semis of the Roland Garros French Open. It will be his sixth encounter with the Swiss tennis genius at the Grand Slam tournaments and he has been victorious on four of the five prior battles. The
lone win for Federer came in the 2011 French Open semi-final.
Of all the 26 matches being played between these two tennis icons, none of them was featured on a grass court, the surface Federer likes the most. It will be a h**l of a contest when the Swiss Maestro will take on the belligerent
world number one on the lush court of Wimbledon for the first time. Certainly Federer will have a slight edge over the Serbian by playing on his favourite surface but he must remember that Djokovic is the defending champion here.
“It's much harder to defend on grass time and time again than on any other surface,” Federer said,
“It's unusual, maybe (because of) the ball coming flatter at you. We're used to playing with much more topspin and giving ourselves margin over the net, but then also into the court at the back. Whereas on grass, I think it's worth
it to go closer to the lines, use a lot of the down-the-line shots, which aren't easier to pull off on other surfaces. I honestly do believe I can play my very best on centre court at Wimbledon.”
Federer has clearly revealed his strategy for the upcoming battle and he will eye to hit the lines of the court to beat the brilliance of Djokovic. It will surely be a treat to watch for the tennis fans.
