Roger Federer wins second round match at Wimbledon
Roger Federer has defeated Ilija Bozoljac 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(5) in his second round match at Wimbledon as his quest for a seventh title at the grass court Grand Slam continues.
After using up at least one of his lives in his opening match against Alejandro Falla, where Federer lost the opening two sets and at one stage his opponent served for the match, the top seed’s match against Bozoljac was more straightforward, though not the commanding performance he might have wanted as he seeks to stamp his authority on the 2010 tournament.
However, while it was Bozoljac who lead the ace count for the match, serving 31 aces to Federer’s 16, the world No. 2 will take heart from the fact it was his serve that was not broken in any of the four sets he played today.
Federer broke his opponent twice in the first set to take it 6-2, but with no breaks forthcoming in the second it was the Serbian who took it in the tiebreak.
The defending champion may have produced six fewer winners than Bozoljac in the third set, but he also made just one unforced error to his opponent’s 11, and converted the only break point opportunity he created against the world No. 153’s potent serve to open up a 2-1 lead in the match.
With neither player able to take advantage of the seven break point chances generated in the fourth set (four to Federer and three to Bozoljac) the second tiebreak of match ensued, and this time it was the world No. 2 who prevailed.
In the previous match on No. 1 court, the player who defeated Federer on grass in the final of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Lleyton Hewitt, also progressed to the third round with a 6-4, 6-4, 3-0 (retired) win over Evgeny Korolev, the Australian making just seven unforced errors for the match.
“I played a clean match, a smart match. I served well. Hit my spots really well where I wanted to today,” Hewitt said after the win. The 15th seed now faces 21st seed Gael Monfils in the round of 32.
Third seed Novak Djokovic, who like Federer faced a five-set struggle in his opening match, also moves through to the third round thanks to a straight sets victory over Taylor Dent on centre court, winning the match 7-6, 6-1, 6-4.
