Roger Federer’s chances at the 2011 US Open – Tennis Special
Former world number one Roger Federer will be looking to win his seventeenth Grand Slam title at the 2011 US Open Starting from Monday in New York. Winner of five US Open title, Federer will be hoping to bag one more trophy at
the New York City with a strong and consistent run.
Federer, who is arguably the greatest player of all time, had not been at his best since the year 2011 has started. His Grand Slam record this season isn’t that great either. At the Australian Open, he was upset by world number
three Novak Djokovic. The Swiss continued to struggle on the Association of Tennis Professional’s arena as he experienced several upset defeats.
Currently ranked 3rd in the world, Federer has managed to lift only one ATP trophy this year. His ability to make it all the way has been questioned over and over by the critics. At the 2011 French Open, Federer avenged
his Australian Open loss to Nole to reach the final. However he was again outclassed by the master of clay surface Rafael Nadal.
But Federer still believes that he has what it takes to keep going. "I'm not angry. As an athlete ... you should be open to criticism, and you're allowed to be criticized, because not everybody has the same opinion, not everybody
likes the same players. The rankings are quite volatile: Today you're 'great,' tomorrow you're 'not,' but then you're 'great' again. It makes for great stories. Now, I always look at the long term and by doing that, obviously, I can stay calm through the storm."
It will be very fair to say that his confidence level is not as high as it was used to be before however, he is still hungry for the titles. Former world number one and winner of fourteen Grand Slam titles, Pete Sampras, commented
on Federer in an interview,;
“Roger Federer is still as hungry for titles as ever”. He further added that, “Swiss player loves both the lifestyle and the travel that being a tennis player affords him”.
Federer faces a tricky draw at the 2011 US Open championships. The warm up tournaments; Montreal and Cincinnati did not bring the best of results for him as she failed to reach final of both tournaments. The Swiss will have to
find a way to overcome the hard hitting Colombian Santiago Giraldo in the opening round. Dangerous Thomas Bellucci could be his opponent in the following round.
Federer’s rival in the third round could be Ryan Harrison. The Canadian tennis pro has been in terrific form over the last few weeks. If the 30-year-old tennis master makes it to the semi-final, he will be facing Novak Djokovic
in it. However Federer still believes that he has the game to beat Nole on any surface. In an interview he said of Djokovic, "I know I can beat Novak on any surface; I’ve done that in the past.”
Federer’s has looked vulnerable at times this year. Against Jo Wilfred Tsonga, he went down after he was up 2-0 in the set score at 2011 Wimbledon Champions. He also lost in the quarterfinal to Tomas Berdych at Cincinnati. Surely
he is not as consistent as he was used to be before. However, one can never write him off for the record he has achieved in the world of tennis.
