Roger Federer’s impetus finally halted at the hands of Andy Roddick in Miami – Tennis News
A shocking outcome in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open was witnessed, with the third seed Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, bowing out to the former world number one, Andy Roddick, in a dismal manner. The current world number
34, Roddick, outplayed Federer in a taxing three-setter, 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-4, to halt the winning momentum of the third ranked Swiss on Monday night.
The world number three came to Miami, Florida, with a 16-match winning streak and was deemed to be the hot favourite for winning the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event here. The ‘Tennis Genius’ had already
bagged three championships this year, completing the hat-trick of tournaments in Rotterdam, Dubai and Indian Wells. His sublime run of form had ignited the hopes among his fans that the third ranked superstar is well on his way to reclaim the world number
one spot this season.
Federer’s loss at the hands of a 34th ranked opponent was extremely heartbreaking for the tennis lovers. The Swiss Maestro was anticipated to do away Roddick with utmost ease and improve his head-to-head record against
the American to 22-2 but it went the other way round. A stunning performance from the 29-year-old veteran drove away Federer from the mega even in his very second encounter.
‘I had my chances, I thought Andy did well to get the first set and then put me in the situation in the third ... he served really well, played aggressive and had a clutch serve when he needed it,’ said Federer after suffering
defeat from Roddick. ‘It was a great night for him and for American tennis, I guess, but it was tough for me. It was a close match that didn’t go my way. I came out a bit flat today, I was a bit tired, I guess, but it was more mental than physical, I think.’
Indeed the Swiss tennis ace was observed to be flat and fatigued in the contest against Roddick. It was the same venue in 2008 when the American last defeated Federer and had endured six consecutive losses to him since then. Federer’s
recent triumphs were greatly appreciated by all tennis lovers and it was a real shocker for them to see him beaten by an opponent ranked far below him.
Although Federer is out of Miami Masters, his ambition of reclaiming the world number one throne is still underway and it is hoped that the Swiss Maestro will make a thumping comeback in the next ATP event to give treat to his
fans.
