Rogers Cup 2010: Andy Murray defeats Roger Federer to win the title
The number one British tennis star, Andy Murray won the Rogers Cup title this year after defeating the Swiss tennis Master, Roger Federer in a total of two sets, in Toronto on Sunday. The final match score was 7-5, 7-5.
After the match Murray said, “It is highly motivating for me at the moment as the final Grand Slam, the United States Open tournament is also around the corner. My confidence level has improved to a great extent as a result of winning this title after beating the Swiss Master and hopefully I will play even better in the upcoming Cincinnati as well as the US Open tournament in New York”.
Andy’s victory shows that the Scott is back in action and is going to be a major threat in the upcoming Cincinnati Masters as well as the final Grand Slam of the season, the United States Open tournament, starting on the 30th of August.
Another encouraging factor as far as Murray is concerned is the fact that the right handed Scott knocked down both Federer as well as Rafael Nadal in the same championship on the very first tournament of his career. Suddenly he is the one to defeat in the hard surface tournament.
Federer on the other hand made his way into the final of the Rogers Cup tennis tournament 2010 in a most un-Federer fashion. In his last two rounds, the Swiss had been forced to depend on his opponents’ mistakes to avoid loss. Tomas Berdych, his quarterfinal opponent couldn’t control his nerves where as the second seeded Novak Djokovic ran short of strategy and ideas in the semi final battle. However, Federer was already aware of the fact that Murray would not commit such mistakes easily in their final clash, and that is exactly what happened at the Rollax Centre on Sunday.
In comparison to the Fed Express, Murray had been playing quite well over the last week. In spite of the fact that the twenty three year old Murray recently changed his coach Miles Maclagan, he didn’t lose his concentration as far as his game is concerned.
As a result of this victory, Murray has registered his name as the very first player since Andre Agassi to grab the Rogers Cup title on two occasions in a row.
The Scott while talking to reporters after the match said,
"Winning a title is always a great feeling beyond any doubt however it is the very first occasion that I have managed to beat both Roger Federer as well as Rafael Nadal in a single competition which is perhaps the most impressive thing for me. And what is even more impressive is the fact that I have not missed a single set against both of them”.
Murray further added, "It is highly satisfying as it is something that does not happen to everyone on every other day. As far as I know I have never managed to beat Roger Federer in straight sets in the past”.
Murray managed to knock down the new second ranked Roger Federer on Sunday after a period of eighteen months.
As far as the big man, Roger Federer is concerned; despite losing the final battle, the Swiss was quite satisfied with the way he played after his grass court Grand Slam quarterfinal defeat at the All England Club last month.
"Today was quite A tough clash and Murray played well to defend his title. He went for aggressive style of game and didn’t commit many mistakes throughout the match and therefore deserved this win”, said the twenty nine year old Federer.
