Rogers Cup 2010: Kim Clijsters breezes into the quarters in Montreal
Belgian tennis ace Kim Clijsters reached the quarter-final round of the 2010 Rogers Cup after beating Kaia Kanepi in a total of two sets on Thursday. The final match score read 6-2, 6-1.
Kim, who captured the 2010 Cincinnati Masters just a few days ago after taking down Maria Sharapova in a three setter final battle, had to overcome Bethanie Mattek-Sands from the USA in her previous match on Wednesday.
“I was fighting against a player who could not miss a single shot, where as today Kanepi was missing a couple of them, particularly since her strengths are normally her backhand as well as her serve”, said Clijsters after the match. “I had a couple of good chances during my today’s match and I am glad that I rightly utilized them to secure a victory here in Montreal. It always feels great to win a championship that really boosts up your level of confidence and gradually its helps in improving your own game and working on your weak areas and play even better”, she added.
As a result of this victory, the Belgian will battle it out against eight seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva in her quarter-final match. Vera made her way into the quarters after defeating Agnes Szavay from Hungary in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-3.
Kim Clijsters looked quite satisfied by the win against Kaia Kanepi after going to the wire against Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Wednesday.
The former world number one has so far lost just once against Vera Zvonareva in her career. The defeat came in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Championships.
“Well, she is one of the best tennis players from the women’s side on the tour and we always had difficult matches, a couple of three setters or very close ones”, Zvonareva said. “I never succeeded in beating her and at last I did that at the grass court Grand Slam tournament this season in one of the big matches as a result of my accuracy and consistency”.
“I always believe in my ability that I can beat anyone on the court if I play at my best. All you need to do is to come out there and not only know the game strategy but be able to adjust it with the situation of the match. It is definitely highly significant to play at your very best in order to knock down someone in the quarters in such a major event”, Vera added.
In other action on Thursday, eleventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova claimed a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win to confirm her spot in the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup at Uniprix Stadium on Thursday.
Kuznetsova will play her quarter-final match today against Zheng Jie from China who toppled fourth seed Elena Dementieva in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7-6 (3), 6-4.
Second seed Carolina Wozniacki did well to take down her fifteen seeded opponent Flavia Pennetta in a total of three sets. The final match score was 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
In some other matches, tenth seed Victoria Azarenka defeated her ninth seeded Chinese opponent Li Na in a two setter clash whereas Marion Bartoli from France got the better of Czech Republic’s Iveta Benesova in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-0, 6-1.
As a result of this victory, Marion Bartoli will face Victoria Azarenka in the quarter-final match of the Rogers Cup 2010.
