Rogers Cup 2010: Nadal and Djokovic defeated by Vasek Pospisil and Milos Raonic
The two wild card local entrants Vasek Pospisil along with his partner Milos Raonic knocked down the top ranked tennis players Rafael Nadal as well as Novak Djokovic on Monday at the Rogers Cup 2010 in Toronto. The final match score was 5-7, 6-3, 10-8. With this victory, the Canadian pair has registered their biggest ever win in their professional career.
As a result of this victory, the nineteen years old Raonic along with the twenty years old Pospisil have confirmed their spot in the second round of the tournament where they will face the fifth seeded Melzer along with the German tennis ace, Philipp Petzschner.
However, they were not the only local pair who knocked down the big guns on Monday. Earlier, in a singles match, a wild card local entrant, Peter Polansky who is ranked number two hundred in the world, managed to upset the thirteenth seeded Jurgen Melzer in the singles draw. The final match score was 7-6, 6-4. As a result of this win, Peter has reached the second round of the competition.
"What makes me feel good is the fact that I remained focused all through my clash here in Toronto”, Polansky said. "I just played my normal game and read the entire situation pretty well’, he added.
In some of the other matches on Monday, Victor Hanescu kicked out Raonic from the singles draw, triumphing in a total of two sets in the end. The final match score was 6-4, 6-4.
Raonic, after the match, told reporters that he did appear in today’s match versus the fifty four ranked tennis ace with some preparations.
"I knew from the start that I will have to fight really hard in order to win today’s match”, said the two hundred and fourteen ranked tennis ace, Raonic after the match. “I didn’t play badly it’s just that he played better than me”, he added.
Hanescu fired a total of four aces and grabbed seventy five percent of his service points versus Raonic in a time period of sixty nine minutes.
Some of the other Canadians who participated in the singles matches on Monday included Frank Dancevic as well as Pierre Ludovic-Duclos.
On the other hand, Adil Shamasdin and Dancevic were kicked out of the doubles championship on Monday by Simon Aspelin and Paul Hanley in a three setter clash in Toronto. The final match score was 7-5, 7-6 (3).
The Rogers Cup tennis tournament, being played at the Rexall Centre in Toronto, has a deep hard surface where eight of the top ten tennis players are participating this season for the 2010 title.
As far as the rest of the Monday matches are concerned, the Argentinean tennis player Juan Ignacio Chela thrashed out Alejandro Falla of Colombia in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-0, 6-3. Sergiy Stakhovsky in his encounter with Richard Gasquet concluded the two setter match as a winner. The French tennis player, Julien Benneteau also won his match against Denis Istomin. On the other hand, the Spanish Tommy Robredo knocked down Jarkko Nieminen from Finland in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-1, 6-4. The South African tennis ace, Kevin Anderson defeated Leonardo Mayer from Argentina with a final match score of 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Thiemo de Bakker in his yesterday’s match also did well to beat the Spanish Feliciano Lopez in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7-6 (2), 6-3.
In the doubles competition, the German tennis ace, Philipp Kohlschreiber along with Gael Monfils from France knocked down the Brit pair Ross Hutchins as well as Andy Murray in a total of two sets. Moreover, Julien Benneteau along with Michael Llodra thrashed out Jarkko Nieminen and Robin Soderling with a final match score of 6-3, 7-5.
