Rogers Cup 2010: Peter Polansky defeats Jurgen Melzer
The two hundred and seventh ranked tennis player in the world, Peter Polansky shocked everyone on Monday at the Rexall Centre as he managed to upset the Australian tennis ace, Jurgen Melzer in the first round match of the 2010 Roger Cup. The final score read 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. The local tennis ace performed brilliantly and smashed shots flawlessly all around the court. Jurgen, who was a semi-finalist at the French Open 2010, is currently ranked as the number fifteenth player in the world.
“I still can’t believe the way I played today, just superbly. It was one of my best performances so far in my career”, said Polansky after the match. “I had few practice sessions with the big guns including Roger Federer and I did actually play pretty well during those sessions so I came out here with high level of confidence and that helped me a lot in beating the Australian. I am really glad with this victory. What is even more encouraging for me is the fact that I didn’t lose my concentration throughout the match and tackled the pressure situation pretty well”, he added.
The 22-year-old Canadian, who fell from a three story building at a tender age of eighteen, had never thought he would appear on a tennis court. However, he astoundingly recovered from the life threatening injuries within a period of just four months.
Polansky showed a lot of grit and determination as the player did not give up even in times when he was down during the match in Toronto. As a result of this victory, Peter has advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup and is expected to go a long way in the tournament.
In another match, Holland’s Thiemo De Bakker won his match against Spanish tennis player Feliciano Lopez in a two setter clash. The final match score was 7-6 (7/2) 6-3. On the other hand, twelfth seeded Russian tennis ace, Mikhail Youzhny knocked down France's Gilles Simon in a total of two sets in Toronto. Latvian ace Ernests Gulbis in his clash surpassed Thomaz Bellucci, with a score of 6-1 6-4.
14th seed Nicolas Almagro got the better of Illya Marchenko 7-5 5-7 6-4 in the first round of the Rogers Cup 2010. Kevin Anderson from South Africa knocked down Leonardo Mayer in a two setter clash with a final match score of 7-6 (7/2) 6-4. As a result of this victory, Kevin will face either Michael Russell or Sam Querrey in his next round match.
Coming back to Peter’s victory, the Canadian, while commenting on his injury incident four years ago, claimed, “I don’t really think about it too much,” he said on Monday. “However, I don’t mind talking about it at all.”
However, it was not the greatest ever upset by a Canadian professional tennis player in the Rogers Cup as the 314th Canadian player Simon Larose managed to pull off the biggest ever upset by knocking down Gustavo Kuerten back in 2003.
In another match, Milos Raonic was knocked down by Victor Hanescu in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6-4, 6-4. The 19-year-old Canadian while commenting on his performance said, “I am really happy with the way I played today and hopefully I will continue to perform well in the rest of the tournament as well," said Raonic.
