Rogers Cup 2010: Rafael Nadal Wins Opening Match
The twenty four year old, top ranked tennis ace, Rafael Nadal, clad in his pink shirt, really had to fight to the very end on Wednesday. He put on this fight in order to grab his first victory against his Swiss opponent Stanislas Wawrinka, since winning the grass court Grand Slam tournament last month at the All England Club. At the end though, the Spaniard won the tough two setter match at the Rogers Cup tennis Competition in Toronto, with a final match score of 7-6 (12), 6-3.
After winning his opening match at the Canadian Open, the Spaniard said, "My aim was to win. Whenever you come back after a break, it takes time to get back in form and initial matches are always tough". "I utilized all my efforts and didn’t give up till the end but off course it takes some time to find back your rhythm"
Rafa, as he is commonly known as, entered the York University after having a successful season, which according to him was something “unexpected”. He won the clay court French Open title as well as the grass court Grand Slam crown prior to his Toronto trip.
When commenting on the state of his knees, the number one male tennis player said that his knees were in perfect shape with a great overall physical fitness level. He said that he is ready to grab the trophy he won back in 2008. So far Rafa has won the Rogers Cup tennis tournament on two occasions in his career. Including the time when he knocked down the former top ranked American tennis ace, Andre Agassi before holding his first trophy back in 2005.
The twenty fourth ranked Swiss tennis ace, Wawrinka on the other hand didn’t play well enough in his match against the Spaniard on Wednesday. The twenty five year old started off quite well with a good first set during the match, but lost focus in the end.
Rafael Nadal finished the first set of the match in ninety two minutes; this marked the lengthiest tie breaker in Rafa’s career. "There was a lot of pressure on every single point of the match”, said Nadal after the victory. "Any how when you win in the end, it really boosts up your level of confidence to a great degree", he added.
As a result of this victory, the number one tennis ace, Rafael Nadal will face Kevin Anderson, a South African tennis ace in his next clash of the Rogers Cup tennis tournament 2010 in Toronto.
"I had some tough moments during the match however there were some points when I played superbly as well” Nadal said. "I tried to play without any pressure which is very important especially when you are coming after a break’, he added.
The top seeded, Rafael Nadal in a news conference after his first Rogers Cup tennis tournament 2010 victory said that, “the hard court season is very significant in the sense that it prepares all of the players prior to the United States Open competition of the year in New York."
And when commenting on his performance, he said “I am glad with the way I performed today against the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka". "Although, I did commit some mistakes beyond any doubt during the first set of the match however over all, it was a good performance by me and I am pretty satisfied after this win”, he added.
