Rogers Cup 2010: Roger Federer wins opening match in Toronto
The twenty nine year old Swiss tennis master, Roger Federer won his opening match of the Rogers Cup 2010 after knocking down Juan Ignacio Chela in the second round of the tournament in Toronto. The final match score was 7-6 (9/7), 6-3.
The right handed Federer commonly called, Fed Express has recently hired Paul Annacone as his temporary coach. Paul has also served with the former top ranked American tennis ace, Pete Sampras.
After the match the Swiss Maestro said, "I am really happy with the way I performed today”. He required a total of seven set points to grab his first victory of the tournament in the period of forty eight minutes.
"I was a little upset when the championship started, however Paul really boosted up my confidence and I am glad with the way I won today’s match”, said Federer after his victory.
Federer’s foot movement as well as his serve looked flawless and he played with alot of confidence against Juan on Tuesday. And as far as his partnership with Paul Annacone is concerned, the Swiss master will take a final decision after the fourth Grand Slam of the season, which will be starting from the 30th of this month.
The third ranked Federer was kicked out at the quarter final stages at both the French Open as well as the grass court Grand Slam tournament this season. The Wollerau resident is currently participating in the Rogers Cup 2010 and will play in Cincinnati as his next tune up tournament prior to the United States Open event in New York.
After grabbing a total of five trophies on consecutive basis at the Flushing Meadows, the Fed Express lost the final match of the US Open last year while playing against Juan Martin del Potro.
"It is always a great feeling to come back and straight away win the opening match in a comprehensive manner”, said Federer. "In my opinion what matters the most at the end of the day is the result of the match. It’s natural that you cannot play perfectly flawless in your first match after a six weeks break however I am sure that I will get back to my perfect form soon as I have played a couple of practice matches before coming here”, he added.
"In short it was a nice effort. I think I did play some good shots along with some effective back as well as forehand. I wanted to come back and win my opening match and here it is I have managed to follow my plans and hopefully I will perform better as the tournament proceeds”, said the big man.
In another match on Tuesday, Robin Soderling, hammered down Ernests Gulbis in a three setter clash. The final match score was 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. As a result of this victory, Soderling will face Tomas Berdych, who is this year’s grass court Grand Slam runner up, in his next clash in Toronto.
Berdych on the other hand is looking for his very first trophy of this season. He started off the Rogers Cup 2010 with a victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-4.
"I have made my way into the finals this season however didn’t manage to win a single title so far”, said the twenty four years old Tomas, who has captured a total of six ATP trophies in his career up till now.
In another match, the Serbian tennis ace, Viktor Troicki upset the eleventh seeded Marin Cilic in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-4, 7-6 (7/2). Alexandr Dolgopolov in his match also managed to surpass his German opponent Philipp Petzschner on the court yesterday, with a final match score of 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7/4).
