Rogers Cup 2010: Tomas Berdych defeated Sergiy Stakhovsky in Toronto
Born on September the 17th, 1985 in the city of Valasske Mezirici, Tomas Berdych is a professional tennis player from the Czech Republic. The right handed Czech was a finalist at the 2010 Wimbledon competition this season as well as a semi finalist at the 2010 clay court French Open tournament. He reached his careers highest world ranking of number seven back on the 9th of August 2010.
The twenty four year old Berdych would continue his game plan for the rest of the season despite losing important matches at major events this year. However, a win at this week’s Rogers Cup tennis tournament in Toronto will definitely boost his confidence and prepare him for the final hard court Grand Slam of the season.
Tomas, also know as the all court player, might come out at his very best on the courts of North America where he successfully managed to make his way into top eight previously, at Miami as well as the Indian Wells final.
Darren Cahill, (who was the coach for Roger Federer as well as the American tennis player, Andre Agassi) when discussing Berdych’s prospects in the upcoming United States Open championship said, “Tomas definitely has all the talent in the world to knock down top ranked players while playing at his very best. So who knows he might walk from the city of New York with the season’s final major title in the end”.
"His turning point came at Indian Wells. However, what is more encouraging now is the fact that he is playing with a greater level of confidence and he can win games even when he is not playing at his very best”, said Darren.
While the top two tennis players of the world, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, will play their singles matches later this week in Toronto, the Czech has already started his hard surface campaign with a victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky in a total of two sets on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-2, 6-4.
At the Legg Mason tennis Classic tournament, Berdych couldn’t pass the quarter final round in Washington.  The Czech in spite of not winning a single title, has done well to reach his highest career rankings of number seven in the World; this has been a result of his capability to reach the later stages of major events.
The Czech did accept that his final loss in the grass court Grand Slam tournament last month touched him a great deal, however he said that he would not let it affect his performance in the future.
"I did well to reach the finals of two major events this season however I will further work hard”, said Berdych. "So far I have captured a total of five trophies and I will try to add some more by the end of the season”, he added.
Berdych came to the limelight when he made his way to the quarterfinal round at Indian Wells earlier this year. The next week, he reached the final at Miami, and even knocked Roger Federer down on his way.
As far as the ongoing Rogers Cup 2010 is concerned, the Czech tennis player, Tomas Berdych, who is seeded seventh for the event, was looking strong on Tuesday as he managed to finish off his second round battle against Sergiy Stakhovsky in a total of two sets in Toronto. In another match, Robin Soderling defeated Latvian Ernests in a three setter clash with a final match score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
