Rogers Cup Tennis Tournament 2010
Rogers Cup Tennis Tournament is taking place at York University this season, engulfing its fans with thrill and excitement. The event was held in Montreal last year when the Swiss tennis master Roger Federer participated in the competition after his victories at 2009 clay court major and Wimbledon. On the other hand, the current number one tennis player, Rafael Nadal appeared last year after a long break in Montreal. The Spaniard was making a comeback into the tennis scene after missing out ten weeks, including the grass court Grand Slam tournament due to his knee injury.
Federer was seeded number 1 for the last year’s Roger Cup with Nadal as the second seed. However, neither of the two managed to pass the quarter finals of the tournament. Federer, in his quarters match was knocked down by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a total of three sets with a score of 7-6, 6-1, and 7-6.
Nadal, on the other hand, faced Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarter finals where he was thrashed out by the Argentinean tennis player in a total of two sets. While commenting on his performance after the match, the Spaniard said, “There is no doubt that it was hard to concentrate, especially since I was making a comeback after a long period. However I am still pleased that I made it to the quarter-final.”
The Swiss couldn’t find any rhythm in his game while competing Del Porto in the quarter. His serve didn’t support him and he was easily overtaken by his opponent.
Del Potro, the winner of the quarter faced American Andy Roddick in the semis, whereas Tsonga came head-to-head with Andy Murray. Potro and Murray fought the final battle with Murray turning out to be the winner in the end.
In this year’s Roger Cup competition, Rafa and Federer are appearing without much match practice, except the grass court Grand Slam tournament at All England Club. The draws for Toronto took place on the afternoon of August 07, 2010. There were chances that Del Potro would make a comeback in the event; however he has officially withdrawn along with Tsonga, due to his injury.
Injuries may result in the withdrawal of other top seeded players as well, prior to the start of the action. Players Ernests Gulbis and Lleyton Hewitt have already declared their retirement at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic few days ago in Washington and will not be making it to the matches.
Currently Nadal is the number player for 2010 Rogers Cup competition with Novak Djokovic ranked number two in the world, ahead of the Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer by a total of 110 points. Critics suggest that Rafa and Federer may end up facing each other before the final battle.
The Brit number one tennis ace, Andy Murray who is the defending champ is also participating in this year’s Roger Cup 2010. At the moment, all top players Nadal, Federer, Novak and Murray have equal chances of making their way to the final round. The tournament is not missing out a single favourite from the series.
Last year, Federer, Djokovic as well as Nadal all were kicked out in the quarter. The number one ranked Rafa is expected to play with much ease during the series. Djokovic and Federer are pretty close in points and could shuffle their number two and three rankings after the tournament.
Murray, on the other hand is in serious danger of further dropping down in rankings. Davydenko, Soderling or Del Potro, either one of them could cross over Murrays ranking this season.
With much tennis thrill and action coming ahead in the form of Rogers Cup that will feature all the top-ranked tennis stars, the fans are ready to get glued to the seats. With all the excitement, this would be a remarkable tennis festival.
