Rogers Cup Women’s Championship 2010 opens with a bang
It wasn’t a very perfect opening day for local players at the Rogers Cup Women 2010 on Monday in Montreal. Both Canadian favourites Stephanie Dubois as well as Aleksandra Wozniak lost their first round clashes at Uniprix Stadium. There was more disappointment in store for Canadian fans when both local doubles teams were also kicked out on the very first day of the 2010 Canadian Open Women’s championship.
Wozniak was knocked down by her Swiss tennis opponent, Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2. Stephanie on the other hand was hammered down in a total of three sets by a Czech tennis ace Klara Zakopalova on Monday. The final match score was 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
After the match, the 22-year-old Wozniak said, “It is such an ideal conditions to play here in front of your local crowd who have been supporting me since childhood. However, I am really sad over the fact that I have lost the match in spite of the fact that I had such a huge support backing me up throughout the match.”
As far as the doubles matches on Monday were concerned, Marie-Eve Pelletier along with Toronto's doubles partner Sharon Fichman were defeated by Caroline Wozniacki and Daniela Hantuchova in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 7-5.
Pelletier, after losing the match commented, “It's a heart breaking defeat here in Montreal. In spite of the fact that they provided us with so many chances but sadly we didn’t grab any of them and as a result lost the match.”
In another doubles match on Monday, Heidi El Tabakh along with partner Vancouver's Rebecca Marino also lost their opening round clash at the hands of sixth seeded pair Jie Zheng and Yung-Jan Chan in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-1.
The championship had its first upset on Monday when fourteen seed Shahar Peer from Israel was defeated by Estonia's Kaia Kanepi in straight sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-3.
French tennis ace Aravane Rezai claimed victory from the jaws of defeat when the sixteen seeded player made a roaring comeback, well in time to oust her Czech opponent Petra Kvitova in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-7 (1), 7-5, 6-3.
Rezai after the victory said, “I really enjoyed the way crowd supported me all through my first round clash in Montreal and it’s all because of them that really boosted up my confidence level and I came back in the match to eventually beat Petra.”
In the qualifying rounds, Australian player Jarmila Groth got the better of Alona Bondarenko in a two setter clash. The final match score was 7-6 (9), 6-2. Iveta Benesova in her qualifying match defeated Italy’s Sara Errani in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2. In the third qualifying match on Monday, America’s Vania King defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain with a final match score of 4-6, 6-1, and 6-2.
In another match, Swiss tennis player Patty Schnyder ousted her French opponent Virginie Razzano in Montreal with a final match score of 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-3.
The thirteen seeded tennis contender Yanina Wickmayer from Belgium won her match in straight sets whereas unseeded Russian Dinara Safina who won the Rogers Cup tennis competition back in 2008 defeated Andrea Petkovic in a two setter clash on Monday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-3.
