Rogers Cup Women’s competition 2010: Caroline Wozniacki wins the title
The professional tennis player from Denmark, Caroline Wozniacki won the rain-delayed Women’s Roger Cup tennis tournament 2010 after knocking down Vera Zvonareva in a total of two sets on Monday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2.
The 20-year-old Caroline who is currently ranked number two in the world is likely to be the top-seeded player to win the title at the Flushing Meadows in the city of New York after the top ranked Williams has announced her withdrawal from the upcoming United States Open tennis tournament, starting from Monday. She is in quest for her first major title.
“I never really think about all such stuff. I just try to succeed in every single match that I play,” she said. “We will have to wait and nothing can be said for sure prior to the start of the United States Open tennis tournament. At the moment, I want to enjoy winning this championship. It will help me a lot in playing even better in the final major as it is a real confidence booster for me, it is definitely not a small tournament for me,” added the elevated player.
The final match of the 2010 Canadian Open was held a day later due to persistent rain.
Zvonareva, a grass court Grand Slam finalist on the other hand clearly didn’t play her natural game on Monday. The eighth-seeded tennis ace from Russia on certain occasions let out shrieks after missing some routine shots. Caroline’s ground strokes, on the other hand, were hitting the lines with their normal sharpness.
She captured her third trophy of the season after victories at Ponte, Florida, Vedra Beach as well as at her home competition in Copenhagen.
“I exactly played the way I wanted to,” said Caroline, a first time Canadian Open winner.
Caroline leading 5-3 during the first set of the match fell behind 0-40. However, she once again responded strongly with a total of five straight points to finish off the set.
Wozniacki quickly concluded the match during the second set after winning four straight points on her serve and stepped forward to shake hands with Vera Zvonareva.
Wozniacki was given a champion’s prize of $350,000 where as Vera received $175,000.
The semi-final matches were contested in the morning. Caroline defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova in a two-setter clash with a final match score of 6-2, 6-3, where as Zvonareva won the match after her tenth seeded opponent, Victoria Azarenka from Belarus, withdrew from the match as a result of her foot injury. Vera led 7-6, 1-0.
Trainers worked on Victoria’s foot for few minutes. She did try to walk, however couldn’t stand for longer and sat down. However, Victoria after the match said that the injury was not that serious to keep her away from the United States Open tennis tournament.
“I don’t understand how I got this injury out of nowhere”, said Victoria who was in tears when she talked to the reporters after the clash. “I tried my level best to sort it out and deal with it, however I simply couldn’t continue.”
Caroline and the eleventh-seeded Kuznetsova completed a semi-final that started on Saturday and was delayed as a result of relentless rain with Caroline leading 2-0, 0-15.
Vera Zvonareva fought for her semi-final battle on the National Bank Court, a smaller venue next to Centre Court, adding to her hurdles in the final.
“It was a different surface with totally distinct conditions,’ she said. “I found it extremely hard to concentrate there. I was practising to face Victoria for the last two days as they have clearly distinct styles. In the final, my mind wasn’t there completely and that contributed a great deal in my loss today,” said the leading tennis star.
