Rogers Cup Women’s competition 2010: Dinara Safina back in action
Born on April 27, 1986 in the city of Moscow, Dinara Mikhailovna Safina is a professional tennis player from Russia. The former top ranked tennis ace from the women’s side is currently ranked as low as number seventy in the world by WTA. The twenty-four year old Dinara was a runner-up at the clay court French Open back in 2008, the hard court Australian Open tournament back in 2009 as well as the French Open competition once again last year. The Moscow resident also has had success at major competitions in women’s doubles by capturing the United States Open title back in 2007 along with her partner Nathalie Dechy. The right handed Russian also won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing back in 2008. Dinara is the younger sister of former top ranked tennis ace from the men’s side, Marat Safin. Dinara and Marat together are the only sister-brother tandem in the history of tennis, who both achieved the World number one ranking.
As far as her recent news is concerned, the former top ranked Safina did well to defeat her German opponent Andrea Petkovic at the Rogers Cup tennis tournament 2010 in Montreal. The final match score was 6-3 6-3.
Dinara after the match said that she is feeling hundred percent fit and healthy now. The crowd after the victory also congratulated the Russian on the centre court.
"I am hundred percent fit and healthy now and that’s the reason why I am participating here in Montreal at the Rogers Cup tennis tournament 2010 otherwise there was no point of participating at the end of the season”, Dinara told the reporters. "If I wasn't completely fit I would take some more time off".
A couple of back to back injuries have badly affected Safina’s world rankings. She is now ranked as low as number seventy in the world after reaching the number one rankings last year during the month of April.
The Russian did not participate at the grass court Grand Slam tournament last month at the All England Club as a result of her injury issues. At the San Diego tennis tournament 2010, the right handed Dinara started off well by defeating Alona Bondarenko in her first round match of the tournament a few days ago. However, she was quickly knocked down in the next round match by Kim Clijsters.
Dinara while commenting on her current rankings said, "It hurts to be ranked as low as number seventy in the world specially after reaching the top spot, however, it’s important that I am back and feeling fit and soon I will improve my world rankings as well”.
The victory over the thirty-ninth German tennis ace, Andrea Petkovic on Monday was her fourth since the hard court Australian Open championship. Another important point is that neither of these victories came one after the other.
Safina while commenting on the ongoing Montreal tennis tournament said that Montreal is one of her favourite surfaces, "It is a great feeling to be back here , I have played some of my best tennis matches here”, said Safina. "I hope the crowd will support me and give me confidence to once again regain my lost form and play at my very best. I will definitely try my level best to give my hundred percent”, she added.
Safina’s come back news is a healthy sign as far as the tournament itself is concerned as Williams sisters as well as Maria Sharapova have already withdrawn from the competition as a result of their injuries. Maria Sharapova injured her heel during the final match of the Cincinnati Masters 2010 on Sunday.
