Rogers wins eighth stage as Gazvoda extends his overall leader’s jersey in 2011 Tour of Qinghai Lake
Giant Kenda Cycling team’s Rico Rogers won the eighth stage of 2011 Tour of Qinghai Lake on Saturday, July 9. Gregor Gazvoda maintained his overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The race started in Xining and ended in Lanzhou. The New Zealand road cyclist took a total of 5 hours, 13 minutes and 51 seconds.
Cata Martinez told the media, "The rain has been the great protagonist of the day, has only 4km to the stop line. The team worked well and Cabello Baena has been very attentive to the sprint. "
Previously, Rico won the two stages of Tour of China and also took the two stages of Tour of Gippsland.
Jaan Kirsipuu of Champion System was the runner-up and Yuriy Metlushenko finished third.
Sylwester Janiszewski (CCC Polsat Polkowice), Maxsim Averin (Ukraine) and Boris Shpilevsky (Tabriz Petrochemical Team) were in fourth, fifth and sixth places, respectively.
A group of three riders was formed, which included, Boris Shpilevsky of Tabriz Petrochemical, Sacha Modolo of Colnago - CSF Inox and Philipp Mamos of Amore & Vita, who made their first breakaway.
All of them worked well and build a lead of few seconds over the peloton. Sacha Modolo increase his pace, but he failed and Boris took the first and second sprint of the stage.
After a few kilometres, the three rider’s cyclists were caught by the peloton and a new group was formed including, Yeung Ying Hon (Hong Kong), Sea Keong Loh (Marco Polo Cycling Team) and Wenlong Zhang (China 361° Cycling Team). However, Yeung took the third
sprint of the stage.
Wenlong Zhang took the first mountain of the stage ahead of Yeung Ying Hon and Daniel Abraham. Gregor Gazvoda of Perutnina Ptuj won the overall classification with a timing of 26 hours, 47 minutes and 54 seconds.
Dmitry Gruzdev of Kazakhstan was the runner-up with 4 seconds adrift and Mateusz Taciak of CCC Polast Polkowice was in the third spot with 1 minute and 2 seconds behind Gregor. The stage winner, Rico Rogers, was in 131th place with 48 minutes and 8 seconds
down to Slovenian.
The final stage will start in Lanzhou and all the riders will cover a distance of 94.2 kilometres.
