Rohan Bopanna, Indian tennis ace has set first milestone with his new doubles partner and one of the most influential Indian tennis heroes, Mahesh Bhupathi. He is looking to seal the 2012 Olympics doubles gold medal triumph
with his new partner. It will be interesting to see the level of co-ordination and team play between the newly formed pair in 2012. They will commence their first official match together in Chennai Open, starting in January next year.
Talking about his London Olympics campaign, Bopanna stated, “I am eagerly looking forward to the London Olympics. My calendar for 2012 is not as packed as it has been in the past couple of years, since I am in a better position
to pick the tournaments I will participate in.”
Both players decided to allow themselves ample time before the Olympics kicks off and that why they will not participate in any tournament after Wimbledon 2012. Talking about this, Bopanna added, “Also, we are taking a month
off after Wimbledon to prepare for the Olympics. Also, every match is just getting you match ready for another match, so the more we play (though within limits) will always be good.”
Bhupathi broke up with Leander Paes and Bopanna left Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi after both teams flew back to sub-continent having participated in the Barclays ATP (Association of Tennis Professional) World Tour Finals in O2 Arena,
London. There were no hard feelings and all four players happily separated to form new teams. One of newly formed teams consists of highly experiences Rohan Bopanna and Mahesh Bhupathi.
Bopanna was questioned about any chances of forming the partnership with Aisam once again in 2013; he stated that just like all other professional athletes, their focus is on 2012 and Aisam is his best friend. They have no
arguments; it’s just a tactical decision to team up with new partners in order to bring versatility to their game.
Aisam’s ex-partner, Bopanna, was enthusiastic to perform well at home soil in front of local crowd. Mentioning about Chennai Open, he added, “It feels good to start off the season in front of our home crowd, with good crowd
support.” He was happy to have such an intriguing event to test their new partnership in January.
Learning each other’s game style is the first thing that both experienced doubles players will have to learn. Their first test in Chennai will most probably open up everything to everyone.
