Rohan Bopanna gives India a perfect start in the Commonwealth Games
The Indian side were off to an ideal start in the tennis competition of the Commonwealth Games with the United States Open Doubles runner up, Rohan Bopanna dismissing Robert Buyinza from Uganda in straight sets in the men’s singles contest on Monday.
Rohan was too strong for a player, who has only one ranking point in the ATP list, as he completed a two-setter victory in the opening round on Monday. The final match score was 6-1, 6-4. The clash concluded in a time period of one hour and two minutes in
New Delhi.
The tall Karnataka-lad is scheduled to take part in the second clash on Monday when he teams up with Nirupama Sanjeev versus the top seeded duo of Rodionova Anastasia and Paul Hanley from Australia.
Rohan dropped one hundred and fourteen spots in the ranking list to be at 587, however, the Indian was coming into the competition after playing a major role in the Davis Cup tie versus Brazil and was in total control against his African foe in New Delhi
on Monday.
With a total of two break of serves, Rohan raced to an easy lead of 5-1 in the first set and recorded the lead in just twenty one minutes.
Buyinza who is currently ranked number 1601, overcame the initial jitters and begin to serve quite well in the following set, however, couldn’t stop the unforced errors that continued to flow from his tennis racquet until the end.
After squandering four break point opportunities, Rohan converted the fifth in order to get his first break during the fifth game to be up at 3-2 in the second set on Monday.

He had an opportunity to close the set during the ninth game. However, Buyinza displayed his best game to prevent that point. Still, he could not stop Bopanna from serving out the clash in the following game.
Despite playing on the home soil, there was hardly any crowd to back the Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna in his today’s victory at the Centre Court in New Delhi.
India's Rushmi Chakravarthi, Poojashree Venkatesh and the mixed doubles duo of Leander Paes and Sania Mirza are also scheduled to contest later in the day.
