Rohan Bopanna teams up with Rajeev Ram for the Chennai Open – Tennis News
Indian doubles specialist, Rohan Bopanna, has parted away with his compatriot, Mahesh Bhupathi, for the upcoming season. He has decided to pair up with the American contender, Rajeev Ram, in the season-opening home event at Chennai.
Bopanna and Ram will play in the doubles category of the Aircel Chennai Open, scheduled to be play from 6th January 2013 in India.
Currently holding the 12 rank in the ATP World Tour Doubles rankings, had a decent 2012 season with Bhupathi, registering 38-27 winning record and bagging two ATP championship titles. His tandem with Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi
proved far successful in 2011 season but he has decided to change his partner once again prior to the start of the new circuit. Although Bopanna hasn’t mentioned about the duration of his junction with Ram, it looks obvious that they both will play together
as a team for the entire 2013 season. On the other hand, his former partner, Bhupathi, will team up with the doubles world number five, Daniel Nestor of Canada, at the Chennai Open.
Bopanna and Ram have played as a duo in 2008 Australian Open and went all the way to the pre-quarterfinal rounds of the Grand Slam event. Both of these players have different but competitive styles of playing and can come up with
some surprising results in the tournaments to follow. Ram won his maiden ATP World Tour doubles title at Chennai in 2009 and will return to the same venue to redeem that glory along with the home favourite, Bopanna.
"Rohan and Rajeev have the potential to be one of the top doubles teams in the world. They have played together before and know each other's game well. We expect them to be a formidable threat at this year's event," Tournament
Director, Tom Annear, said.
A successful campaign at the Chennai Open will certainly mean that Bopanna and Ram will carry on their combination at the season-opening Grand Slam event, the Australian Open, next month. Bopanna is considered to be one of the
best doubles player in the world and the experience of Ram will further assist their side to claim glory in Chennai.
