Roland Schoeman wins Men’s 50m freestyle gold: Day seven - South African LC Nationals
Roland Schoeman of NTS-NT won the title of Men’s 50m freestyle on day seven of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Sunday, April 22.
The 31-year-old Schoeman outperformed his challengers in the single lap freestyle discipline and tapped the finishing wall for gold medal.
With his immaculate efforts, he remained nearly two strokes ahead of his following swimmer and tapped the finishing wall for the crown of the discipline with the timing of 22.23 seconds.
The champion was followed by Brad E Tandy of KZNA-KZ, who stayed 0.12 seconds slower from his former finisher and captured silver medal of the discipline by clocking a time of 22.35 seconds.
He was trailed by Gideon A Louw of NTS-NT, who was only 0.10 seconds behind and hit the wall with the timing of 22.45 seconds for bronze medal.
The fourth position of the discipline was secured by Graeme J Moore of CGA-CG, who was 0.55 seconds apart and settled on the wall by clocking a time of 23.00 seconds.
Similarly, Leith Shankland of KZNA-KZ proved his eligibility for fifth position of the event as he posted a time of 23.08 seconds.
Afterwards, Trudi Maree of WPA-WP achieved gold medal of the Women’s 50m freestyle. The 23-year-old Maree faced no difficulty in occupying gold medal of the discipline as she touched the wall with the timing of 25.38 seconds.
With her invincible efforts, she remained nearly one second faster from her following challenger, Lehesta Kemp, who hit the finishing end for silver medal with the timing of 26.17 seconds.
Kemp was trailed by Karin Prinsloo of NTS-NT, who was 0.09 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and ended her race with the timing of 26.26 seconds.
The 22-year-old Prinsloo was chased by Vanessa Mohr, who completed her swim in fourth place by posting a time of 26.34 seconds.
Schoeman was delighted with his accomplishment in the single lap freestyle event and articulated his desire of achieving the same at the 2012 London Olympics. In addition, the position holders were awarded medals after the session.
