Roland Thatcher heads for the Valero Texas Open - Golf News
The United States’ Roland Thatcher is headed towards making his seventh start on the 2012 PGA Tour through the Valero Texas Open, at the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, slated to start from Thursday, April19, 2012.
In the six starts that he has made so far, Thatcher succeeded in making the cut twice, which is never regarded as impressive on any of the professional tours.
However, his recent performance in the Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com makes him a good contender in the tournament. He finished tied for the 12th position on the leaderboard.
Last year, when he appeared at TPC San Antonio, he managed to tie for the 15th position. He is now aiming to improve his score with a better display of game this year.
Despite the poor record on the tour this year, he has a great Greens-In-Regulations average to rank 15th in the PGA Tour stats.
However, his 183rd rank in Strokes Gained-Putting is the major reason for his failures in the tournaments that he plays. According to many commentators, he can really make a difference on the course if he focuses on his putting technique. Without any improvement
in putting, Thatcher cannot surge to the top to earn his first PGA Tour victory ever.
Lee Westwood is one of the big names in the world of golf. He himself admitted recently that putting plays an important role in any player’s success.
He came close to winning the Masters Tournament but his poor putting restrained him to take the third position at the end.
"The story of the week is you have got to putt well to win the Masters and I haven't," he said. "It's the weakness of my game and it's costing me tournaments".
"I work hard on my putting but I can't seem to turn it around but when I do I know I'll win," he added. "It's a case of grinding away and finding the key to make it click and slip into place".
Therefore, Thatcher, too, needs to work hard on improving his putting technique to complement his GIR rankings. Otherwise, he will have to remain winless on a Tour that features the best players from all over the world.
