Role of International Billiards and Snooker Federation and World amateur snooker championship
International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF), acts as governing body on the world level to co-ordinate, promote, and develop the sports of billiards and snooker at the amateur level. IBSF headquarters is presently in “Reims”, France.
IBSF is playing a pivotal role in-order to create world class players by giving them opportunities to take part in world-level tournaments. Exposure is a key element in the development process, thus IBSF is doing a marvellous job by providing exposure to
non-professional and amateur players.
The federation was formed in the year-1971 by the name of "World Billiards and Snooker Federation". Later-on the name was changed to "International billiards and snooker federation" in 1973.
Apart from coordinating, promoting, and development, other key activities of the federation are to determine the championships conditions, formats, time-slots and deciding the venues. The IBSF is a snooker division of the World Confederation of Billiard
Sports (WCBS), whose primary objective is to gain Olympic status for the cue sports discipline.
Tournaments organised and designed by IBSF are recognised and appreciated globally, as hundreds of cue-men avail the opportunity to play with people from different ethnicities and styles.
The IBSF has an affiliation with approximately-60 countries across the Globe, which are categorized according to their respective continent. Each Olympic region has two representatives in the board-of-directors of IBSF.
IBSF organise five major tournaments which include, IBSF World snooker championship, IBSF World under-21 snooker championship, IBSF World ladies snooker championship, IBSF World team snooker championship, and IBSF World billiards championship every year.
This year in 2010, IBSF has organised the World amateur snooker championship. This tournament is taking place in Al-Faihaa sports complex Mazaa in Damascus, Syria. Hundreds of cue-men from over 50 countries around the globe are participating in this high-profile
tournament.
The tournament was initiated on the 3rd of December 2010, it will continue until 15th of the same month and year. IBSF World snooker’s championship, which is also known as World amateur snooker championship features eleven groups and
holds round robin matches. Round robin is a format where all the players participating in the tournament, play each other.
The IBSF World snooker championship has three different categories, Men's, Ladies and Masters. The format of the tournament comprises of opening ceremony, round robin matches, IBSF board meetings, IBSF annual general meeting, and IBSF knock-out-stage. Later
on the rounds of last-64 men's (best-of-seven frames), last-16 masters and women (best-of-five frames) will take place.
The concluding stages of the tournament consist of women and master’s quarter-finals, Men's last-16, Men's quarter-finals. Semi-finals for the three categories will be played on Tuesday 14-December, whereas the finals for the IBSF amateur snooker championship
will be played on Wednesday 15th December 2010.
IBSF World amateur snooker championship has produced world class players of today. Some very famous and recognised players of today got their exposure to world class snooker through this very tournament. Marco Fu, Stuart Bingham, Mohammad Yousuf, Jimmy White,
and Stephen Maguire emerged as world-class cue-men after winning the title.
This reputable tournament is held every year and is contributing immensely towards the development of snooker at an international level. It creates a pool of amateur players of today, polishes them and produces World-class snooker players of tomorrow.
At this time of year hundreds of contestants representing more than fifty countries are playing in Damascus for the title, and to emerge as the future stars of snooker.
