  1. The parent usually knows the child better than anyone else so is a major factor in the life of a child with special needs. They should be encouraged to work with the professionals and their opinion should be sought where ever possible. Also strategies put in place for the child should be used both at home and at school.

  2. The parent plays a very important role in the process.  You are a full-fledged member of the planning and placement team (PPT).  You should attend meetings, provide background information on your child, fill out questionnaires or rating scales depending on what your child is being evaluated for and the parent gives consent to test.  After testing you will also be involved in determing what type of program will best suit your child based on strengths and concerns.

  3. to be coropative with the schools ,attend all conferences just get involved

  4. The trouble with most evaluation processes is that they don't consider the child across environments. They don't look at the natural environment, but instead evaluate based on performance in an office or in JUST one classroom.

Parents see the child in dozens of places, not just at school or at therapy, but at home, in different settings there (kitchen, bath, bedroom), at stores (whether loud or quiet, busy or not), at church, temple or Sunday school, in the street, at playgrounds, etc etc.

Parents also know and love their child in a way that no professional can reach in a few hours. So they have a deeper understanding that is equal to all the training that a professional may have.

  5. You are really the main person in the planning process... they can't do anything without you. If recommendations are made, you can say nay or yay. You can request that anything be implemented that you see fit... You are not just a piece of the team... you are the most integral piece. So, don't just go to meetings and do what people say... Research, make suggestions, and demand services and what's right for your child. You'll see that people will go out of their way for you if you are educated, involved, and follow up. That's just the way it is...
