Rolex nominated as official sponsor of the Senior Open on the European Senior Tour
Rolex, the renowned watch maker, will now be the official sponsor of the Senior Open on the European Tour for a three-year run starting from 2012. The announcement was made at the Walton Heath Golf Club where the agreement was signed by the officials of
Royal and Ancient and Bertrand Gros, Chairman of the Rolex Board.
Rolex has been associated with the Open Championship and the Ryder Cup for several years and this will be seen as an extension of the longstanding relationship between the R&A and the Rolex.
“We are delighted to announce this extension of our support for The Senior Open Championship. The week after an enthralling contest at Royal St George’s, we look forward to a magnificent Senior Open at Walton Heath and to becoming the Presenting Patron for
the next three years, starting at Turnberry in 2012,” said Gros.
The ceremony was attended by all the big wigs of R&A and several other celebrated senior players who will be participating in the event. Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of R&A, also spoke on the occasion and lauded all the support Rolex had extended in its
long run with the R&A. Sitting next to him, George O’Grady, chief executive of the European Tour, also hailed the decision and welcomed Rolex in the fold of Senior Tour.
German golf idol, Bernhard Langer was also present on the occasion, who is also one of the patrons of the company.
“I am delighted that Rolex will become the Presenting Patron of The Senior Open. They have always been a great supporter of golf around the world, including The Open Championship,” said Langer.
The European Senior Tour will be returning with the Senior Open at the scenic Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England and will be strengthened by a field of distinguished senior players on the tour.
Tom Watson, who pulled in quite a show at the Open Championship last week, will be eyeing the top slot and boasts considerable form to do the same. Nick price of Zimbabwe will be making his debut on the Senior Tour after long pause from competitive golf
and will be hoping to make it big in the event.
