Roller on Dirt Devil hand vac won't turn

The roller on my Dirt Devil hand vac isn't turning. First I thought it was the belt, so I changed it. But then I realized there is a lot of dirt & grit between the end of the wood roller and the octagonal metal ends not allowing the roller to turn properly. I've cleaned it out before using a sewing pin to pry out some of that dirt. This time it helped a little, but is there a way to pull off those metal ends to clean the roller? Thanks for your help!
