Roma keeper Alexander Doni rejects Liverpool move because of inadequate salary
AS Roma goalkeeper Alexander Doni revealed he had rejected a move to English Premier League side Liverpool because he did not agree with the salary the Reds were offering.
The 31-year-old Brazilian had been linked with a move to Anfield after the Reds had shown interest in him and the two sides had apparently even reached an agreement.
However, the deal fell through when Doni didn’t agree to the wages offered by Liverpool. The Roma keeper revealed that was one of the main reasons he was not making a move to the Premier League side.
Doni said while speaking to reporters:
“I have only received an official offer from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809, but I could not accept those conditions.
I would have had my salary cut by 60%.
After signing a five-year contract extension with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603 in 2008 and having given a knee for Roma’s cause, I am unwilling to give away money.”
The Brazilian stopper joined the Serie A side in the summer of 2005, signing a one year contract and then added a three year extension to the existing contract.
With six years at Roma, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Total-c40747 of 179 appearances for the Italian side but was looking for a move away after being replaced as first choice keeper.
In the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 season, Doni went on to make just 14 and 19 appearances respectively and was reportedly looking for regular football elsewhere.
The interest from Liverpool gave him hope, but the Brazilian revealed he would not make a move to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 if it meant having to cut down on his salary.
Even if he had transferred to Anfield, it is highly unlikely Doni would have had a chance at featuring for the Reds on a regular basis.
Liverpool first choice keeper, Spaniard http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pepe-Reina-c29672 is 28-years-old and in top form. With Reina having recently rejected a move to Premier League rivals Manchester United, Liverpool are not looking to replace him.
Reina has won the Barclays Golden Glove three seasons in a row, 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-2008 and sharing last seasons’ Golden Glove with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Petr-Cech-c29837.
He is undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in the English Premier League and the only possible explanation for Liverpool eyeing another keeper would be their need of a stand in keeper.
In case of an injury to Reina the Reds do not currently have a reliable substitute, which is why they were considering Doni.
However, the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858 keeper does not fit it too well with Liverpool’s new policy of signing young players for long term success.
At best, the Brazilian has 2-3 years in him and those too as a substitute before he retires from football.
