Roma looking to highjack Benfica’s bid for Axel Witsel – Portuguese Primeira Liga News
Standard Liege’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Axel-Witsel-c7029 is subject of interest from Benfica and deal negotiations are rumoured to be underway. According to the latest reports, however, Roma have also entered the race to sign him.
The Belgian sensation has already stated his desire to move to Benfica and his father also hinted that his son might end up at Estadio da Luz.
The Standard hierarchy is also reportedly convening to discuss the future of their prized asset and the director of football, Pierre Francois, has acknowledged that talks are being conducted with other clubs.
"We are negotiating, please take it easy.”
“We cannot accept an offer which is worth only €6 million for a quality player like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 Witsel. If we do so it would be an act of bad management on our part.” The Standard Superemo was quoted as saying.
Witsel has become one of the hottest properties in Europe and has attracted attention of several big clubs including Manchester United and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786, but none have registered their interest with the Belgian outfit.
Although Benfica are on the verge of sealing a deal, they will face stiff competition from Italian giants Roma, who have been monitoring the situation and are willing to cough up the necessary amount to prise the youngster out of the Eagles’ reach.
While the Reds have made an initial offer of €6 million for the Belgian sensation, Roma are a stronger club and Standard might prefer to sell their coveted midfielder to the Lupi as they boast a bigger financial muscle.
Witsel is already known as a defensive minded player and has had his share of horror tackles. With Italian Serie A primarily focusing on discipline at the back rather than attacking displays like in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Belgium-c2850 International
might prefer a switch to Rome.
That being said, Benfica remain in an enviable position in the race to sign the 22-year-old, which makes them the favourites to land the player despite Roma’s lucrative proposals.
