Romacaca to stay at Gulfstream Park after South Beach victory
Owner Frank C. Calabrese and trainer Danny Miller wouldn’t have their taken pictures with their mare, Romacaca, had Frank C. Calabrese received his price that he reserved for Romacaca at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November Sale.
The 6-year-old mare’s connections must be happy that her reserved price wasn’t met during bidding on 5 November, 2012, because then 9 December, 2012, she went on to land the $100,000 South Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park, and visited the winner’s circle for the fifth time at Gulfstream Park in 10 starts by defeating Chokurei in second and Hooh Why in third with the winning time of 1 minute and 29.37 seconds.
Romacaca by Running Stag, registered her 16th victory of 32 career starts, as she sent as the 3 to 1 favourite to win the South Beach Stakes, and the mare continued from where she left off.
It was the same old Romacaca, who came back to run in the South Beach Stakes after a layoff of 2 months, and before and after she was victorious, as two months from now she won the Indian Maid Stakes at Hawthorne Racetrack on 6 October, 2012.
She defeated Julie’s Love in second and Kepi in third, and under Francisco Torres, she went on to cover 1 1/16 miles in 1 minute and 43.62 seconds.
Romacaca ran on seven and one-half furlongs in the South Beach Stakes, and she was running on the shorter format for the first time, but personally Danny Miller thinks that she is suited for longer distances, as she can relax more and give her all in the last strides.
"She did everything within herself and all I did was try to keep her out of trouble. She worked so well here the other morning so I was very excited to ride her today," said Torres. "Going seven-eighths of a mile, you'll see more horses showing a little more tactical speed than you would going a mile-and-a-sixteenth and a mile-and-an-eighth, so I let her fall out of there and place herself where she was comfortable. When it was time to call on her she quickened up and prevailed."
