Roman Abramovich demanding Premier League and Champions League double
Chelsea captain John Terry has declared that club owner Roman Abramovich is demanding the team win both the Premier League and the Champions League this eason.
“The message is clear from the start of the season - the owner wants to win everything. With the squad we have, he expects to,” claimed the former England skipper.
Despite the lofty ambitions set for the team, there’d be few arguing it’s beyond them. The west London club already top the Premier League and their Champions League group, and have looked
extremely impressive in their start to the season – despite their blip at Eastlands last weekend.
Terry was quick to state that neither competition will prioritise over the other, although that ever-eluding Champions League triumph would undoubtedly be met with more elation.
“You can't prioritise the Champions League or Premier League and put one in front of the other. But the Champions League is the one massive trophy that still eludes us and we'd love to
win that. It is a trophy the owner wants to win and the manager wants to win,” Terry said.
“One reason he (Roman Abramovich) brought the manager in is his experience and the amount of times he has won the trophy himself,” said Terry.
The England defender is of course right in his assessment, as Carlo Ancelotti has already won the Champions League with former club AC Milan on two occasions, in addition to losing that
infamous final in Istanbul, where the Italians led 3-0 at half-time before going on to lose on penalties.
Indeed, Chelsea have had similar heartbreaks in the completion, from Terry’s missed spot-kick that would’ve sealed the trophy in 2008, to Andres Iniesta’s last gasp equaliser at Stamford
Bridge in the semi-final the following year that knocked the Londoners out. It’s been a case of close but no cigar so far for the Blues, but few would write them off going all the way some time soon.
