Viking raids were due to excommunication of their kind. yes, 400 years later. and yeah- eric the red did rule- theyre from scandinavia- they came to england and took over- ANGLICA. ANGLO-SAX- VIKING PEOPLE!! and YES. the VIKINGS WERE BEFORE THE ROMANS. the romans then kicked them out and then the Vikings came back 400 years later and started raping and pillaging EVERYWHERE.

thats how they got back to the romans! and also all of europe!!!

the viking period most historical documents refer to is the latter period, the one that was the affect of the first period- the first period is the one i need info on.

The Byzantines (a later form of Romans) were In eastern Europe and Asia by the time the Vikings appeared.

'Pillaging' was a common practice of that time.  The Romans invaded a country, they would pillage; Al the Great's troops invade Persia, they would pillage; the n***s invade France, they would pillage, and on and on.

Pillaging served three practical purposes: 1)It rewarded troops, who expected something for their hard work, 2) It helped feed troops, so you wouldn't need long supply lines back to the homeland, and 3) It terrorized the people you pillaged - scared them, so that they'd probably lose the war....'Respect for civilians' is pretty much a modern concept, which arose from the Geneva conventions after WW2.

RE 162 AD....The Roman conquest happened at a different time.  Ceasar made the first Roman trip to Britain, about 30 BC.  At that time, the island was led by Druids - not Vikings.  The Roman conquest then occured in steps, up to 100 Ad, when all of Britain was conquered (except Scotland).  Eric the Red was born in 950, about 500 years after the fall of the Roman Empire.

I'm sorry, I think you've been misinformed. The romans predated the vikings. The roman empire was gone by the time the vikings started raiding europe/russia/etc.

Also, if the vikings were somehow defeated by the romans, why would the latter force monotheism upon them? The romans had a plethora of gods, they weren't monotheistic. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Ro...

In addition, it is true that the romans were an advanced civilization, but read up on the vikings as well. They were brutal but not as barbaric as you might think. Much of this stereotype comes from hollywood.

Sorry - you are very much mistaken on all counts.

The viking period in England began in 789 with the attack on Lindisfarne monastery.

Before the Romans the Britons were a Gaelic people, speaking a form of Brythonic Celtic similar to modern Welsh, Breton and Cornish.

The Vikings were from Scandinavia - they and the Romans never met, because Rome had fallen some three hundred years before they came to England.
