Roman Gonzalez pins Ramon Garcia Hirales to become WBA World light flyweight champion – Boxing News
Roman Gonzalez, the former WBA World light flyweight champion, put forth the boxing fans an impressive performance and grabbed a fourth-round technical knockout win over Mexican Ramon Garcia Hirales, the former WBO light flyweight champion, in a 12-round
bout held on April 28, 2012.
The ring for the bout was stretched at Fairplex arena situated in Pomona, California, United States and the event was promoted by the duo of Bob Arum of Top Rank and Fernando Beltran of Promociones Zanfer.
The bout headlined the Saturday night show and gathered much praise from the Californian fans. The engagement was somewhat special for Roman as after the convincing win he was able to grab the title that rightfully belonged to him that is the WBA World light
flyweight title.
Roman, 24, was entering in his careers 32nd bout and had a clear upper hand over his Mexican opponent as far as the experience is concerned. The young Nicaragua lad has never lost even a single bout and boasts an intimidating win streak with 26 of his total
31 wins by sheer knockout.
Also known as the ‘El Chocolatito’, Roman was clearly the favourite from the very first second of the bout but Garcia did had some advantages under his sleeve which he optimally used during the third round of the bout.
Garcia, 29, basically a southpaw, was in his 21st bout and boasted 16 wins with just nine of them via knockout. The two facets that gave Garcia an upper hand over Roman was his southpaw style and his height.
Roman started the things off and attacked Garcia with full force targeting his body and face repeatedly by powerful jabs. The fight continued and during the third round it took a sharp twist when Garcia shocked Gonzalez by his comeback.
The third round was unanimously won by Garcia as he used his long reach and height advantage and threw well targeted fists that connected Roman’s face and body and inflicted as much damage possible.
In the fourth round, everybody expected Garcia to batter Roman but this did not happen as the latter moved forward swiftly and connected two-three left-right combinations that flattened Garcia twice.
This scenario left the bout-referee no choice but to end the bout in favour of the Nicaraguan lad. The bout ended at two minutes and nine seconds of the fourth round and with this win Roman has not only re-acquired his gold but also defended his streak.
After the bout Roman admitted Garcia’s talent and said, “He was able to surprise me in the first couple of rounds with his ability to box. Once he felt my power, he began to back up. When I landed my right hand, I knew he was done. Not too many guys can
take my power.”
Roman now has 32 wins in his account and 27 by KO whereas Garcia has collected his fourth career, first ever knockout and second consecutive loss.
