Roman Soldier Armor Law?

I was told that back when the Roman Army was the most powerful in the world, it was illegal for a Roman soldier to enter Rome in armor. He had to stay in the training field until he took off his armor. Why is that?

  1. To prevent coups d'etat.  Especially important with the rise of the Empire, and legions' loyalty shifting from the Emperor to their own general officers.  Keep in mind that Julius Caesar did almost exactly this when he seized power.

    rome was the greatest and most artfull city then, they didn't want to mix their powerfull army with their powerfull arts,   keep them separate

    its sorta like how japaneese people take shoes off

  3. Actually, the legionaires were excluded from Rome entirely.  The purpose was to ensure civilian rule over the military and prevent a military coup.

  4. The idea is that with no armed soldiers, there could be no coup d'etat.

  5. I would assume to not scare the populace, and have people thinking a coup is happening.
