Romania rallies past Spain in 2012 CEV Women’s European League – Volleyball news
The last match of the second leg of 2012 CEV Women’s European Volleyball League brought Romania and Spain in the contest on Sunday.
Hungarian City Budapest hosted the match, where Romania breezed past Spain in four sets. The final set scores were 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-21). During the first leg of the tournament, Spain defeated Romania in straight sets but failed to do the same
in the second week. Romania worked out great performance and took sweet revenge from Spain.
Daiana Giorgiana Muresan of Romania charted match-high 19 points and captured top-scorer’s slot. Her teammate ONYEJEKWE contributed 14 points and emerged as second best scorer of the match. Spain was led by GARCIA BONILLA, who registered team-high 12 points.
Romanian team broke the ice and scored the first two points, while Spain stood with zero score. Gradually, the Spaniards showed power and went up. They led the score at the first technical timeout, 8-5. Once the Spanish team earned lead, it did not allow
the opponent to return in the game. Spanish ladies led the scores all the way till end and closed opening frame at 25-23.
The opening phase of second set imitated the see-saw battle. Both teams scored back-to-back and remained at close distance. Romania enjoyed one-point lead at the FTT (8-7) and stretched the gap of points at the next break. Spain came from different angles
but failed to catch up with Romania. As a result, Romania levelled the game score by winning second set at 25-19.
Romanian team got its full form back in the third set. On contrary, Spanish side caught up in errors. Romania used the five-point advantage (8-3) to put pressure on the rival side. Muresan attacked with great power and devastated the opponents. Spain could
not manage to take lead for a single time in third set and eventually gave out another frame to Romania (14-25).
It was a ‘do or die’ situation for Spain in the fourth set. The team displayed better action and picked up an early lead. Romania trailed behind at both technical timeouts but made a strong comeback near the end of fourth set. Romanian ladies came from behind
and claimed fourth set (25-21), which sent Spain to 1-3 loss in the match.
Romania’s head coach Atanas Petrov, who was filled with joy after his team’s success in the match, stated, “Except for the first set we really controlled the game. I am happy not only with the result but also with what we showed in terms of quality and consistency.”
His Spanish counterpart Hervas said, “We played a great match but we could not keep up the quality of our game; I congratulate our opponents as they fully deserved to win.”
