Romania thrashes Macedonia in the Men’s Quarterfinal: Day ten – European Water Polo Championships
Romanian squad presented their astonishing skills by thrashing Macedonia in the Men’s Quarterfinal round for 7th-12th position on tenth day of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Wednesday, January 25 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
Romania faced strong competition from their challenging squad but managed to stifle all their struggles by a margin of two goals. Despite of their relentless efforts, the Macedonian squad faced a 12-10 defeat from Romania in the four-quarter game.
After eight days of preliminary session, the European meet is moving towards its final rounds. These championships are of influential value as they precede the 2012 London Olympic Games and provide an opportunity to world-class players to identify their weaknesses before the mega event.
The first quarter saw ruthless aggression of both teams, which engaged each other in a head-to-head battle, but none of them was able to gain the lead. Nicolae Diaconu of Romania scored first goal for his team while his effort was trailed by Macedonia’s Vladimir Kreckovic, who also notched one goal for his squad to level the score 1-1 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was subjugated by Romanian team, which accomplished four goals to overwhelm Macedonia’s three goals effort and the score went up to 5-4 after the halftime.
The same continued in the third quarter, where Macedonia once again secured three goals and Romanian team extended their lead by marking four goals on the scorecard, making the score 9-7 after the third round.
Subsequently, Macedonian team improved their strategy in the final round and scored three goals, but their effort failed to bring any harm to the Romanian squad, which also scored three goals and prevailed in the 32-minute game by a lead of two goals.
The crowd admired scintillating efforts of Romanian players in the water polo game while Diaconu was declared man of the match, as he scored three goals and made a vital contribution in his team’s victory.
Furthermore, Romania will now compete with Croatia in the semi-final round for 7th-10th position while Macedonia will contest again Turkey for 11th position on Friday, January 27.
