Hi, I am Romanian citizen, living in UK for the last 19 months now and I have a british partner.

Does anyone know if I have the right to work legally as the partner of a british citizen (as a romanian citizen I am not allowed).

  1. There are special rules in place for nationals of Romania & Bulgaria with respect to their right to work in the UK. They DO NOT have the same rights in the UK as the original members of the EU. For example, they may have to obtain an 'accession worker card' before they can commence work in the UK.

The Home Office has produced a good Q&A document on this topic - see http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/siteco...

This includes the issue of Romanians who were in the UK prior to Romania's accession to the EU.

It's also worth reading the information on this page:

    http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workin...

If you would like advice about your individual situation then I suggest you go and see your local Citizens Advice Bureau.

  2. you live here, your family is here so!! i dont understand why you would have problems working here?? go to the home office web site. or go talk to some one in your local job centre. they usualy know all that stuff. i hope every thing works out for you. good luck.

  3. What is your visa status?  A "partner" cannot help you remain in the UK no less get you authorization to work.  How have you been supporting yourself while in the UK for 19 months?  It sounds like you need to return home and find a job there.

  4. why marry an english girl is it cause the romanian girls are ugly yes i think you can work here but why ask on here and not immigration authorities your girl friend should know and shes only your partner your not married

  5. You are 100% entitled to work in the UK in your own right as Romania joined the EU and all EU citizens can work in ANY EU member state and you don't need a visa

Natalie C - the areas that EU citizens can work in is not restricted at all - you can work in any profession

  6. Ok this is complicated. Since Romania became one of the new EU states the rules changed.

Basically, if you entered the UK before the EU membership, you will have had a visa. That visa still stands so if you had a six month visa and have overstayed it, you are technically here illegally and have no rights.

If you have entered the UK since Romania became one of the EU states then you are only allowed to work in certain areas such as farming and au-pairing.

Your British partner does not affect your status unless you are married. Go to the Home Office website for more details. Hope this helps.
