Romans plan to take down I’ll Have Another through Dullahan
Trainer Dale Romans, who conditions, Dullahan, third in the Kentucky Derby thinks that his 3-year-old colt can spoil I’ll Have Another’s bid to become the 12th horse to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed, 34 years back.
Romans said that the Donegal Racing’s Dullahan had a much better trip in the Kentucky Derby and only lost to the winner by a slim margin of one and a half lengths – which could have been better, had he not started bad from the gate.
It was the start that had Dullahan chasing the race throughout the 1 ¼ mile event under the Twin Spires, but it wasn’t the end of it as the Even the Score colt under jockey Kent Desormeaux made a huge mistake going round the club house bend.
The field was turning for home, and if anyone has raced at the Churchill Downs before, knows that going nine wide entering the early stretch is suicide, especially against such quality horses, who thrive on little mistakes and in a big race like the Run
for the Roses.
Despite Dullahan making some fatal mistakes, he should have been far back finish way under 10, but he persevered, and his talent was on display as he came from nowhere to close down the two leaders rallying hard for the wire.
Dullahan was just unlucky to go that wide, as he managed a solid third in the Derby.
Now, according to Romans, if Dullahan goes on to have a clean trip in the Belmont Stakes than he can definitely run down I’ll Have Another to win the “Test of the Champion.”
It is a 1 ½ mile race, and it is hard to win a marathon distance race, because jockeys aren’t used to that kind of a distance, and horses alike. The pace will be so much that nobody will realise how fast the horses are going, but in reality jockeys tend
to go all out in the early part of the Belmont Stakes.
Burned up horses turn for home, and then whoever has a bigger engine than the rest goes on to win after a tiring race, and Romans believes Dullahan has that extra in him to beat I’ll Have Another on the Big Sandy’s homestretch.
