My husband and I always save for a special five star fine dining dinner on our anniversary every year. There's nothing like, you feel totally pampered and have plenty of time to talk. The sommelier lets you taste a variety of wine, the servers don't bring your food until YOUR ready, it's great!  You never feel rushed with a server dropping off the check "for whenever you're ready." I hate that! Anyway, if you don't go out to eat all the time, that would be a special treat.

  My and my husbands idea of fun may be entirely different from other people's but in most cases we go on  extended camping trips to the most isolated area we can find.Sleep in hammocks, skinny dip,cook on a campfire, and just hang out together.

I would be wonderfully surprised if for any anniversary my partner took me out for a candlelight dinner, afterwards maybe a night in a hotel that has the jacuzzi & or fireplace, or dancing.

if finances where a problem- a quiet dinner at home, that i did not have to cook & clean up afterwards for, play romantic music & have a quiet night the two of us dancing at home. Don't forget the candles.

Cook her favorite meal.

Buy her lingerie.

Take her to do something fun that you don't get to do often.

Have a 5 theme. On my 5th with my boyfriend, I bought a little chocolate cake for us and put a 5 birthday candle on top.

Run her a romantic bath: candles, rose petals on the water, romantic music, wine.

Weekend getaway. It doesn't have to cost much or be somewhere exotic. A quick trip out of town is always fun.

Get a couple roses and pick the peddles off and have them leading from the door to wherever you will be standing and have one rose in your hand and take her to a limo and then to a pretty resterant =]

Good question.  The modern gift suggestion for the fifth anniversary is silverware.  

In this case, however I think you should go traditional.  The traditional fifth anniversary gift is wood.  

You need to give her as much wood as she can handle.  Call in help from a friend or two if you think you might fall short of the mark.  She'll thank you for remembering this important landmark date in your relationship.  Trust me.

If she works that day... surprise her by trying to be home before her, candles lit and house tidy (you dont realize how romantic a clean house can be after years of marriage)... maybe her favorite flowers sitting on the table, and either a homecooked meal she would like, or take-out from her favorite restaurant. And after, a candle-lit bubblebath :)  

if you have kids, try to find a sitter for the night too. Time alone together is rare and precious
