  1. Hello,

they are very strict in Rome and Italy as a whole on what you can wear in churches and basillicas.  You must cover your knees and shoulders.  Men must wear pants and a nice top.  Women can wear capri pants with a nice top but not shorts or short skirts.  You will be asked to leave if you don't have the proper attire on.  It is out of respect for  a holy place that they enforce these rules.  It is a very religious country and showing too much skin is very offensive to them especially when you are in a church.  Remember, this rule is for all churches and basilicas, not just the vatican.

  2. The rules are that shoulders always have to be covered and legs covered to the knee.

  3. It's a tourist attraction, you'll be able to wear whatever you want.

Although I'd never wear shorts and a polo shirt if I was paid to do so.

  4. You WONT be able to wear whatever you want IF you plan on going INSIDE SOME of the attractions, such as St. Peter's Church. I know for sure sleeves are required (either long or short sleeves, but you CANNOT go sleevless. If you do go sleevless, they usually require you to put a scarf or shawl around your shoulders to cover up your arms, this is why you might see a scarf being sold for insane prices). As for pants, you probably WILL be able to wear shorts unless they changed anything... but shorts should be fine.

Thats only if you plan on going inside. And its good to know that ever since 9/11, security has been bumped up, so you may see procedures similar to those you find at the airport.

  5. you might not be allowed in some more remote places because of shorts.... but as long as they are not hotpants you should be alright- any women in your group be warned- vest tops are not acceptable! but most will offer you a scarf with which to cover your indecency! (though as the places are full of the Madonna with her b*****s out I find this misplaced modesty a little contrived-)

  6. I'm italian and i went to Rome last year. When you go in the Vatican you aren't allowed to wear short, you can get inside only if you have pants and for women T-shirts and not tops!

there are also metal detector before entering in the vatican. in the othere churchs you can wear what you want!!

    ciao!!

  7. Sounds fine by me. I saw worse.
