Rome's public transportation?

How good and efficient is rome's public transportation?

I'm planning to visit Rome at 2-5 March 08..and currently i'm thinking to stay at Prime Hotels Roma Cassia,Via Barbarano Romano, 19, Rome since the price is reasonable. However I'm a little bit worried with the location since it seems like it's far from city centre. How long actually it will take to go to tourist attraction by public transportation in Rome?

I went to Italy two years ago, I stayed at the Michelangelo Starhotels, and found the service there to be impeccable. It was also only two blocks from St. Peter's Square! It was an amazing and I thought that all of the public transportation was excellent. It's very easy to simply catch a subway train, and my cousin (whom I was visiting while he was studying there) often took the bus. It was also easy to walk ANYWHERE from our hotel. We were able to walk all throughout the city, and really excperience the city's culture and history that way.
