Rome City Break?

Going to Rome for a 5 day break. Looking for some must see things while I'm there????

Rome - Vatican Museums which include the Sistine Chapel, St Peter's Basillica, Castel Saint Angelo, Forum, Colosseum, Palatine, Circus Maximus, Via Appia, Ostia, Gallery Borghese, Capitoline Museums, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon and many many churches.

I can only list a few things here or I'd be going on for days

If you're pushed for time then train travel in Italy is very cheep and efficient.

Great guide books are the Eyewitness Travel Guides. They have photos, every attraction you can think of, opening times and great maps.

Lucky you!! The colosseum and Forum and Pantheon are all within walking distance of each other (The first two are on the same road).

There is so much history with everything (for example, the colosseum used to have naval battles in it! When you see it, you'll understand why its so impressive!) and in the Forum there is a little room, down some steps with an upside down cross.... Alledgedly St Peter and Paul were held there with other Christians and the cross was inverted to insult them!

I would mention that outside the colosseum, but still within the grounds, are LOADS of people trying to sell you tours. DONT do it. We DID have to queue but for a max of 10mins and then the official guide was cheaper than the ones outside!

Along the way you'll past street after street of history- its just a fantastic city! Heading from the Piazza Nova (hmmm... might not be right) to the Trevi Fountain one night, we walked down a little side street and found a church with a choir performing- brilliant!!

Your hotel/ hostel should have a map at the hotel... When you arrive, I would DEFINITELY try and figure out all the things closest to each other. St Peters and the Vatican need a days work (personally, I feel the Vatican is over rated- the best bit was the museum!). Try and book online for tickets because i lost count of the hours i stood to get in! Also, if you search online, you should find 'an audience with the pope' on wednesdays. It has to be booked in advance tho.

The Vatican City and St.Peter's square with St.Peters Basilica,it looks amazing and whilst you're there you can pop into to see the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael Rooms.

Take a few walks and see the Spanish steps and the Trevi fountain and don't worry too much about getting lost as you find some really good sights that way.

Well a must is the Colosseum, and also the Vatican... when you are in Rome you will not be short of things to see as you come across them as you are going round. Make sure you also take a walk in the main park as there are loads of old fountains and monuments to see, and the park is beautiful...

Enjoy it, we did... oh and be careful of the prices of the soft drinks vans on the roads, very expensive we paid 5 euros for a small bottle of water, so go to the corner shop and buy it and walk round with that....

Well, the others told you of a lot of places already. I did enjoy the Vatikan and the Sistine chapel. We also went to a church called "St. Peter in chains". They keep the chains St. Peter was wearing when they brought him back to Rome there. Was very touching to see that. There was another church where they keep St. Peter's ashes. Don't remember the name. The collosseum was amazing too. Since you have 5 days, maybe you could take a day trip down to Sorrent and go to Pompeii. The city got totally covered with the lava from Mt. Vesuvius. When we went there 10 years ago, they were still finding more buildings there, we didn't get to see yet. From the whole Italy trip we did, Pompeii was the best. It was just amazing, the paintings are still on the wall. And it's only a day trip from Rome.

Rome is a dump, but if You must see the sights, use a tour bus, which You can board and leave as You please.
