Rome area hotels outside of the city?

Somewhere 20-30 minutes from the city would be fine, we are renting a car. We are going in May/June so we though being out of central Rome would also help with the budget since that's peak season-ish. Clean, good service, etc. - not looking for the Ritz, just a decent place that won't cost a fortune. Suggestions??

  1. you couldn try one of the beach resorts like fregene which is north of the city. The problem is that at certain times, it'll be a night mare to drive back. Italy isn't cheap for accommodation but I've tried these guys before and was impressed http://www.holiday-velvet.com/rome

  2. My suggestion, find a place near the center, driving in Rome.. : I don't raccomend it, only if you are planning to visit the country side. If you planning a day trip to florence is also esier with the train (2 hours and you are in the center of florence).

Look at www.acj.it/tritone it's around 100 euro a day, is near the spanish steps, just outside a metro station. At nigth you can just go out and walk around the city; if you are outside the center you can't.

20/30 minutes from the city somentimes with traffic they can be 2 hours... no fun

    ciao

  3. Trust me, you don't want to drive in Rome.  Traffic is terrible and Romans are lousy drivers.  Gasoline is very expensive (between 4 and 5 dollars a gallon.)    I lived in Rome for twelve years and had a car, but most of the time I left it at home and used public transportation.  There are reasonable hotels in the center, particularly near the train station.
