Hello, I'm going to Rome from May 22-June 22 for a short study abroad program. Do you have any recommendations for great restaurants/gelato places/places to go out, or anything that is a must see?

  1. Take a foray into the Foro - The Roman Forum was the main marketplace and business center in ancient times, where you did your banking, trading, and shopping. Entering the forum is free, now as then.

Partake of the Pantheon - Originally a pagan temple, converted into a church in 608AD, which saved the whole deal from being ravaged for building materials. You'll find it in Piazza della Rotonda, a favorite hang-out for young folks in the evening.

Piazza Crawl - Piazza Navona and Piazza Campo dei Fiori are the two most famous piazze in Rome. Piazza Navona, which follows the plan of an ancient circus and contains two famous fountains by Bernini, comes alive in the evenings, while the Campo dei Fiori (the field of flowers) is best experienced during the market hours.

Strolling the neighborhoods: Trestevere - "Believe it or not, this is the "Italian quarter" of Rome. The streets are narrow and sometimes winding, although more often than not they will eventually lead back to the Piazza Santa Maria, home to one of the oldest churches in Rome.

  2. I'm jealous ;)

If you are looking for a great spaghetti restaurant, check out l'Archetto - it is near the Trevi Fountain.  It's what the Italians call a 'spaghetteria' - they serve only spaghetti and you might be thinking 'boring' but really, it's a very unique place.  They have dozens and dozens of different spaghetti dishes.  Some are so creative that you just have to try them.  They also serve pizza, and the food is very well priced.

Avoid restaurants in the tourist areas since they tend to be overpriced.  You can always spot a tourist restaurant if you see people eating dinner around 5 or 6pm.  Italians do not generally eat dinner until in the late evening, between 7pm and 9pm and even later in the summer months.

The best gelato in Rome is from San Crispino - I think that they are the oldest gelateria in Rome: http://www.ilgelatodisancrispino.it/02do...

There are lots of great gelato shops.  There's a great one in EUR near the man-made lake.  I think it's the only one there so you can't miss it.  EUR is kind of stark but an interesting place.

Must sees:  Villa Borghese, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Vatican, Ancient Forums and sites, Via del Corso (lots of shopping streets there), Spanish steps, Trastevere (especially the church of Sta. Maria in Trastevere), Piazza del Popolo.

Definitely get a guidebook.  Check out this blog on Rome - it's new, but it has a lot of good information:

    Hope my information was helpful!

    Ciaooooooo :)

  3. I highly suggest getting the "Let's go Italy" book.  It was a God send when we were there.  They have all this information with directions, what busses/trains to take, etc.  Your library probably has it and you could just copy the pages on Rome.

  4. The Sistine chapel, and the Coliseum are must sees. Both are in Rome

  5. The Gilda bar is a great bar in the cenrte of Rome http://romeitalyapartments.blogspot.com/...

For restaurants there are so many good ones that the best thing is to find a nice local one and go there often.

The vatican and a football game are must sees.

  6. You can visit the followings...Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain

  7. if you want the best ice cream in rome you should go at "the old bridge" that is in "Piazza risorgimento"
