Question:

Romeo and Juliet Act II Scene II

For the auditions at school, I have to do the prologue and Romeo's "But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?" monologue. I am relatively happy with how I do the prologue, but when ever i preform the monologue, it sounds so forced, as if I am reading it allowed in class. How can I fix this and perform it better for my auditions?

  1. okay....u've just gotta imagine that ur romeo....just think:

u've met this chick at a party, and u think she's pretty hot and have decided to go to her house and try to talk to her after the party

You see her room on the second story of the house and become so entranced by the fact that she's just behind the walls. the light through yonder window bit, is of course him seeing the light in her room. He thinks that he luvs her after seeing her only once, and thinks that she is beautiful; that her beauty is like the sun, ie. the bit that is 'it is the east, and juliet is the sun'. 'come fair sun and banish the envious moon' or woteva it says is said becoz he wants J to come out and see him.

as otha peeps have said: loosen up, maybe watch Zepherelli's version of R and J to see how Romeo did the scene in that, and just try to get in touch with ur inner Romeo

    hope i helped!!

  2. just let it flow. pretend you are talking at your sweetheart lol and loosen up! lol

  3. Does it sound forced because you're not really in sync with Romeo's feelings, or is it the Shakespearian language that's throwing you off?

If it's one of these reasons, just focus on the fixing the problem.
