Romina Oprandi, Galina Voskoboeva make it to the main draw – US Open 2011
Another upset in the women’s qualifying rounds, with the fourth seeded Romanian, Edina Gallovits-Hall, falling to the 17th seed Romina Oprandi of Italy, in the final round of qualifiers of the US Open on Saturday afternoon.
Being played at the hard courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, the contest featured a comprehensive straight sets victory for Oprandi, settling
the final scores at 6-3, 6-2. The fourth seeded Gallovits-Hall hung in the matchup for just one hour and fifteen minutes before succumbing to the Italian to let her in to the final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
The contest was stuffed with a number of serve breaks from both contestants but the Italian kept winning points on regularity to keep the upper hand in the game. Gallovits-Hall’s error-ridden game, which included eighth double
faults, wore her out in the game and let Oprandi fly away with a comprehensive victory.
Gallovits-Hall registered two serve breaks in the opening set but suffered three break point conversions from the Italian to drop the first set at 3-6. Once getting into the winning impetus, Oprandi never turned back in the following
set, launching a series of forays upon his opponent to drive him out of the contest comprehensively. The Italian cracked in four out of nine serve breaks to outplay Gallovits-Hall in the second set, concluding victory at 6-2, to earn a place in the main draws
of the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Oprandi will take on American contestant, Melanie Oudin, in the opening round of the main draws of the US Open.
On the other hand, the top seeded qualifier, Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan blew away Nina Bratchikova of Russia to book a berth in the main draws of the Grand Slam tournament. The top seeded Kazakh settled the final score at
6-2, 6-2, taking merely 62 minutes of play to drive Bratchikova out of the competition with the utmost ease.
Voskoboeva banged in nine aces and reeled off 18 out of 24 first serve points in the game to come out as the winner. The Kazakh cracked in five out of nine break points, while suffering one serve break from his opponent, to make
it to the main draws of the US Open to face the seventh seed Francesca Schiavone of Italy in the opening round.
