Romina Oprandi plonks Camila Giorgi to clear round two – China Open 2012
World number 69, Romina Oprandi, ousted the 20-year-old Italian, Camila Giorgi, in the second round of the China Open. It was a one-sided encounter totally occupied by the 26-year-old Swiss who bagged the encounter in straight
sets 7-5, 6-2 taking just an hour and 14 minutes at the hard courts of Beijing.
The opening set witnessed a thrilling start; featured some epic hitting from the 93rd ranked Italian qualifier. She took a lead of 3-0 at the start courtesy a breakpoint coupled with two marvellous serve holds. It seemed
like she will run away with the show in a very short period of time but a reverse in the luck in the following three games equalized the scores at 3-3.
Oprandi broke serve in the fifth game and surrounded it with serve holds to bounce back into the encounter. The spectators in the arena loved every bit of the contest and didn’t move an inch despite seeing two low ranked players
in action.
Both players utilized their power serves to their help and converted the following games in their favour. No breakpoint was seen for the subsequent four games that pushed the scores to 5-5. A tie-breaker round was around the corner
and it would have just took another round of serve hold from both players to come into play.
However, it wasn’t the case and the Italian qualifier lost a breakpoint in the 11th game that allowed a lead to her opponent at the most critical stages of the match. The Swiss star was tested rigorously by the youngster
but she did well to survive five deuces in a row to post a serve hold. It was a thrilling encounter but the match was always tilted in favour of the Swiss superstar who just had a little slump at the start.
Oprandi took a resounding lead of 5-0 in the second set. She never looked in any sort of trouble and had already broken her opponent’s serve thrice. She allowed just one breakthrough and a serve hold to Giorgi before winning the
encounter.
The Swiss will play Ana Ivanovic in the next round.
