Romina Oprandi upsets Urszula Radwanska and advances to round two – China Open 2012
World number 64, Romina Oprandi, won the first official Women Tennis Association contest in the opening round of the China Open at Beijing after losing four in a row. She dispatched the 36th ranked Pole star, Urszula
Radwanska, in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 to book a spot in the second round of the contest.
Radwanska looked out of touch and couldn’t handle the onslaught from her rival. Oprandi came out with a fantastic plan and executed it to perfection. She didn’t allow her competitor to play her natural game; tied her down completely
and reigned supreme over the Pole in all aspects of the sport.
The Swiss star failed to open up the proceedings of the match in a good manner but didn’t bob down and took it as a challenge to fight back into the contest. She was trailing a breakthrough down at the scores of 2-3 but fought
back to break serve and equalize the scores at 3-3.
Both players traded breakthroughs that pushed the scores to four games apiece in the opening set. There was no drama witnessed for the following two games as both players capitalized on serves to make it 5-5.
However, the 21-year-old Pole tested her foe rigorously but couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities provided to her to break serve. On the other hand, the 26-year-old Swiss converted the only chance allotted to her in the following
game and took a set lead.
Oprandi didn’t look back from that stage and trounced her rival with a double breakthrough at the start of the second set. She held her serves to capitalize on the breakpoints and pushed the scores to 4-0 in her favour. She looked
set to register a bagel but her opponent bounced back with a breakthrough that lowered the trail to 1-4.
Both players traded breakpoints in the following two games that pushed the scores to 5-2 in favour of the Swiss. Radwanska had to hold serve to keep the set alive but she couldn’t and fall victim to an upset. Romina Oprandi plays
the winner of the contest between the sixth seed Italian star, Sara Errani, and the qualifier to be decided.
