Ron Artest commits to raffling his championship ring
More of Ron’s eccentricities
Ron Artest will be raffling off his 2010 NBA Championship ring for charity 25 December. Proceeds will go to Artest’s non-profit organization – Xcel University – which will then be responsible for choosing two charities – one in the Los Angeles
area and another one nationally.
The charities that will be considered are ones focused on mental health issues and awareness and that help in removing the stigma associated with mental health therapy. The beneficiaries of the raffle will be announced on 27 October which is a day after
the Lakers receive their rings.
The tickets for the raffle will be two dollars and a minimum of five must be purchased. The tickets can be bought online at www.ronartest.com.
Damage control
Artest is known of being somewhat of a loose cannon both on and off court. He has admitted to being drunk before games when he played for Chicago and he was reported as asking his Pacers coach back in the 2004-05 season to promote a music
album he had produced. Perhaps most famously he is remembered for his rampage into the stands at the Palace of Auburn Hills. This among his previous behavior lead to his year – long suspension and a tarnished reputation along with speculation about Artest’s
own mental health.
Perhaps this explains why Artest wishes to give back to his community; by giving to charity Artest is not only doing damage control for his less noble acts of the past but is also one step closer to admitting that he himself has struggled with mental health.
Ultimately, this act will win over quite a few fans and make his greatest critics at least slightly more sympathetic whether he deserves it or not.
Artest was a key player in the Lakers Championship run in 2010.
