Ron Dennis praises Martin Whitmarsh for the 2010 season
Former McLaren team boss Ron Dennis is one of the most legendary people in the sport. During his reign, McLaren secured 7 constructors’ titles and it was because of him that the team became one of the top running teams of the sport.
However, Ron left the team earlier this year and after his departure, Martin Whitmarsh joined the team as the team’s boss. The 2010 Formula 1 season was pretty impressive and crucial for the team after a disappointing 2009 season. However, the team was able
to pull it all together and give one of their best performances to date.
Both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were competing for the drivers’ title actively until the 2nd last race where Jenson Button was unable to give a good performance and as a result, he was ruled out of the championship mathematically. Red Bull
secured the constructors’ title at the 2nd last race in Brazil as well and it seemed that McLaren’s chance of winning either of the titles was now bleak.
Lewis Hamilton on the other hand was just able to save his title run and as a result, McLaren took its drivers’ title run to the grand finale in Abu Dhabi but Lewis was the least favorite as he was 24 points adrift of the drivers’ standings leader Fernando
Alonso.
However, since both of the McLaren drivers are former world champions, Ron Dennis believes that Martin Whitmarsh is doing a better job than he ever did with two champions. Ron gave McLaren its highest peak after he signed both Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost
in the team. Both of them had a lot of clashes and it was definitely not easy handling two legends in one team at a time.
“Managing the co-habitation of two world champions is often a challenge. I have tried it a few times. Martin is perhaps showing himself to be better than me at that role,” said Ron.
Before that, Ron had to handle Nikki Lauda and Alain Prost at the same time as well and he is aware of how difficult it is to handle two giants in a single team.
