The Chelsea chief executive has come out and backed Torres to play a larger and a more central role in the Blues’ next Premier League campaign after Didier Drogba’s departure from the club...
Gourlay has backed Torres to become the focal point of Chelsea’s attack next season in both the English Premier League as well as the UEFA Champions League after Didier Drogba’s departure from the London club. Drogba who has been
the central figure at Chelsea in attack for the last eight years was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786’s match winner against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final at Allianz Arena.
Drogba’s form in the last few weeks of the season meant that Torres had to be content with the relegated role on the bench at the club which inspired feelings of anxiety and frustration in the Spanish striker’s mind and led to
his lack of form.
Torres was signed by Chelsea for 50 million pounds from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 in the January transfer window of 2011 but he has not performed up to the expectations thus far at the London club. In his interview to the press after the UFEA
Champions League final, Torres admitted that he will reconsider his future and his role at Chelsea during the summer and have a talk with the club to determine what they expect of him.
Gourlay reflected on Torres’ situation at Chelsea as he said, "We've got http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-c13609 Torres
is a world-class centre-forward and Fernando Torres will score goals for Chelsea. I’m not worried about Fernando at all. We've just won the Champions League and Fernando Torres played his part in that.”
He added, "It's not all about goals. It's not just about the individual scoring goals but also his teamwork.” It will be interesting to see how Chelsea change their style of play which is central to their usage of Drogba in the
past but with Torres they can play a more expansive style of play which is based on territorial dominance rather than aerial dominance as was the case with Drogba in their line up.
