The Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay has confirmed that Brazilian defender David Luiz will not be leaving the Blues to join Barcelona.
Rumours emerged that the La Liga giants were interested in buying the central defender after his terrific performance for Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final. However, according to the Blues chief executive, the 25-year-old is not for sale.
Chelsea signed Luiz from Benfica in the January transfer of 2011 along with striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707. While Torres was a flop, Luiz went on to prove himself to be a success. He has so far made 52 appearances in all competitions and has five goals to his name.
His most prominent efforts for the Blues were in the UEFA Champions League final in the absence of skipper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gary-Cahill-c14439, Luiz was brilliant in central defence, doing well to keep Bayern Munich from finding the
back of the net more than once.
Since then he has attracted a lot of interest from prominent sides, including http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858 international in the summer transfer window but Chelsea are not looking to sell one of their best players.
Gourlay admitted the value of the centre back has increased dramatically after his performance in the European Cup final, especially after he scored in the penalty shoot-out, which the Blues went on to win 4-3. The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 chief executive revealed he was
not worried about retaining the services of Luiz, or anyone else for that matter.
He felt it was flattering for the club that other sides were showing interest in their players, but that did not mean they would agree on selling them. Gourlay said while speaking to reporters:
“The value of David Luiz was there for everyone to see on Saturday night. Of course, we'll keep him. We're the champions of Europe.
We shouldn't have any problem keeping hold of our players. I'd be disappointed if our players weren't attractive to other clubs. That just shows where we are.
People are interested in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Luiz-c10542 because he's done fantastically well.”
